Certificate Class on Administrative Regulations

Join us for this week’s Certificate in Research Skills for Practice class – Administrative Regulations without Westlaw and Lexis.   The rules and regulations federal agencies promulgate heavily impact certain areas of law. When researching these areas of law, it is important to know how to find and update an existing regulation as well as how to find proposed rules and other agency materials related to that regulation. Learn how to tackle this type of research  without relying on Westlaw or Lexis. Classes will be held in Room 323 at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2 and Thursday, March 3.

Facebook, “The Social Network,” and Hollywood’s Ethics

In The Ethicist column in last Sunday’s New York Times Magazine, Randy Cohen explored some ethical issues surrounding Facebook, as depicted in the movie, The Social Network.

On the question whether Mark Zuckerberg stole the idea for Facebook, Cohen asks, “what idea?”

MySpace, a similar social-networking site, already existed, and CU Community was up and running at Columbia University. The Winklevosses, movie villains as buffoonish as those in any Disney cartoon, gleefully proposed giving their site the amber glow of Harvard snobbery, but they hardly invented that either. And yet they unleashed their lawyers.

Certificate Class on Massachusetts Legal Research

The next class in the library’s Certificate in Research Skills for Practice series is on Massachusetts Legal Research. It is offered twice, on Wednesday and Thursday, February 23 & 24, at 1 pm in Room 334.

The class will provide an overview of primary legal resources for Massachusetts law research, and it will emphasize practice materials and other state-specific tools used by Massachusetts lawyers.

As starting places, we’ll use the library’s legal research guide and subject guide to electronic resources for Massachusetts law, as well as the sites of the Social Law Library and the Massachusetts Trial Court Libraries.

For this class, here are the class handout, the assignment in pdf or word format (due by March 4), and a survey (it takes only a minute or two to provide feedback about the session).
